Mbita, Kenya
Mbita is located in Suba district which spans a total of 4,250 square-kilometers and contains a population greater than 500,000 individuals. Currently, six health care facilities serve the entire population. YGC expanded to Mbita two years ago to build a Vocational Training Center for men as the orphans were getting older and unable to find jobs without necessary training. The training center is in a prime location, surrounded by smaller villages.
In July 2009, the students began construction on Stage 1 of a clinic, the outpatient department. The outpatient department includes two consultation rooms, a treatment room, a two-bed observation room, a pharmacy, laboratory, and administration office. Construction will be completed by February 2010 and patient care will begin by the end of the month. Stage II of the clinic, a maternity department, has been funded by the TEW Foundation. Construction is scheduled to begin by March 2010.
