VOLUNTEER EXPERIENCE

“I first visited the MED25 clinic site in the summer of 2009 with my son, Evan, and we were honored to participate in the ground breaking ceremonies for the MED25 Clinic. Returning in March of 2011, it was amazing to witness the impact that the clinic is having. The community is engaged, utilizing the services, and reaping the benefits of affordable, available health care. The professional clinic staff, dedicated community healthcare workers, and community advisors, are a cohesive team that not only provides medical services, but is also open and welcoming to the community.
I cannot adequately describe the feeling of pride that I feel in my affiliation with the MED25 Clinic, and all that it represents. I am anxious to return, and participate in any way that I can to help facilitate the evolution of the health care services provided to the region by MED25.”

“When I traveled to Kenya, I wasn’t sure what to expect. I had heard many amazing stories about the work MED25 was doing in Mbita and was looking forward to seeing it up close. What I witnessed—and had the pleasure and honor to be a part of—was a community of people coming together to address the need for access to quality health care. As a volunteer, I learned so much about how to go about assessing the needs of a community, how to deliver quality health care when supplies and staff are limited and even had the opportunity to help roll out several educational projects. In Mbita, I encountered a group of people living in such severe poverty they could hardly pay for food, let alone the mosquito nets I would tell them they needed. Yet they were joyful, hospitable, and so thankful for what they did have. They take pride in their homes and will welcome you into them any chance that they have. The experience in Mbita was one I will never forget; I look forward to going back.”
–Paula Kett, RN

“The month I spent volunteering with MED25 was an amazing life experience, not only because of the area and community but also as a result of the remarkable organization itself. The clinic and staff provided a very welcoming atmosphere as I was able to help with the running of the daily operations of the clinic as well as some of the great community outreach programs. One such event during my trip was the 1st annual MED25 soccer tournament, which the entire community rallied around. In addition to some great soccer, we were able to spread the word about the clinic and about healthy habits. It was a huge success because of the dedicated nature of the clinic staff and the wonderful community it serves. Volunteering with MED25 was a great experience and I am excited to find another chance to get back to Mbita.”

“I had the opportunity of spending 2 weeks at the MED25 facility in Mbta, Kenya, during June of last year. This facility serves a very rural area of western Kenya on Lake Victoria. People would come from miles around, involving sometimes days of travel to get treated at this clinic. What was so unique about the MED25 facility is that on site it had 100% of the resources required to treat the various diseases. This entailed a laboratory, nursing pre screening, pharmacy and doctorial staff. Folks would come to the clinic, would receive a pre diagnosis, appropriate lab work, a secondary or primary diagnosis, the appropriate medication and typically a follow up session all in one brief visit. It was health care at its best! I found all the staff to be extremely passionate about the work they were doing for these very sick individuals. There are some very, very wonderful and humbling things happening at this little clinic.”

“Working with MED25 in Kisumu was truly an unforgettable, life-changing experience. The relationships I formed during my time at Young Generation Center, with the children and staff alike, are unbelievable. I was so fortunate to be able to participate in such a meaningful and promising project in an area full of both need and reward. MED25 is making a real difference in the community through health care and education efforts, listening and acting with locals, and unmistakably impacting the lives of those with whom it comes in contact.”
-Jessie Paull

“Volunteering with MED25 was a wonderful experience because I was invited to see and participating in all that was happening- I was welcomed to watch the work that was being done, to participate in ongoing projects, and to develop new projects based on needs I assessed. There was a balance between structure and freedom, projects that needed completion and free time to learn about the culture of the people. I appreciated the diligence that was taken in developing relationships and finding out what the people needed and coming up with ways to serve those needs. It is encouraging to see the MED25 team care deeply about providing health care that is culturally relevant and sustaining, and it was an honor to participate in the work being done in Kenya”
-Laura Crumly, RN

“Volunteering with MED25 was an amazing experience. The relationships that were built while helping at the orphanage in Kisumu were incredible. MED25 has a heart for the people of Kenya and the pandemic of HIV/AIDS.”
-Michelle Johnson, RN

“I had a life changing experience traveling to Liberia with MED25. The team on the ground is doing amazing work to provide health care to the people of Belle Yella and the surrounding rural areas. I instantly felt at home with the staff and was very well taken care of during my stay. I greatly encourage others to donate their time and expertise as a volunteer with MED25.”
-Leana Nápoles

“MED25 has a true desire and passion to serve and offer accessible health care to those living with HIV/AIDS and poverty in Africa. It was great to work with an organization that listened the desires and needs of the people and acted upon them. I feel blessed to have been able to volunteer with MED25.”
